Frequently Asked Questions

What are ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, and GMR? +

They're Performing Rights Organizations (PROs) that collect royalties on behalf of songwriters and publishers. If you play music publicly — even background music from a streaming service — you need licenses from all four.

Does my bar really need all four licenses? +

Yes. Each PRO represents different songwriters. Playing music without a license from all four means any song in their catalog could trigger a copyright infringement lawsuit.

What happens if I don't get licensed? +

PROs can sue for statutory damages of up to $150,000 per song. They have a near-100% win rate in court. Several well-known bars have been sued and forced to close.

How is LicenseFlow different from just paying the PROs directly? +

We pay all four PROs in full on your behalf, so you don't have to deal with four separate organizations, four different portals, four different payment schedules, and four different renewal processes. You make one simple monthly payment to us.

What does it cost? +

Your total depends on your venue's capacity, the type of music you play, and your hours. A small bar might pay $75-150/month total. A large live music venue could be $350-800+/month. We calculate your exact fee and show you the breakdown before you commit.

Is there a contract? +

Your agreement matches the PRO license term, typically 12 months. We handle renewal automatically so you never have a gap in coverage.

What if my venue is under 3,750 square feet? +

Small venues may qualify for a limited exemption that covers radio/TV music with up to 6 speakers and 4 TVs (55" max). However, this exemption is narrow and doesn't cover streaming services, DJs, live music, or karaoke. Use our free risk checker to find out if you qualify.

How fast can I get licensed? +

Most venues are fully set up within a few business days. ASCAP and BMI process online; SESAC and GMR may take slightly longer due to their manual processes.

Do I get proof of licensing? +

Yes. We provide a compliance certificate you can display in your venue and a public verification link anyone can check. If a PRO rep visits, you're covered.
